What is Society of Salome about?
Our community, founded in 2021, aims to create a meeting space for people interested in the fashion & culture of the Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco periods. We gather individuals who like to dress vintage / historical, who make or collect vintage & historical garments, and who are passionate about different cultural aspects of those periods, including literature, art, music, theatre, early cinema, fashion, furniture, interior design, etc.
We strive to explore history in all of its diverse aspects, appreciating the beauty of the past, while also interpreting it in a critical and progressive manner. We believe in the 'Vintage Style, Not Vintage Values' motto - our events are meant to be a safe and comfortable space in which we welcome diversity and self-expression.
Although passionate about fashion history and period details, we are not a re-enactment group and do not treat ourselves too seriously. Our events are meant to be fun, light-hearted and full of shared enthusiasm for our artistic interests.
The name Salome refers to Oscar Wilde's most famous play, published in 1893 and banned in Britain until 1931, which embodies the decadence and poetic beauty of the turn-of-the-century period.
How often does Society of Salome meet?
We meet several times a year at various picnics, museum outings, walks and parties. Every year, we organise at least one event in each of the following dresscodes: 1880s-1890s; 1901-1918; 1920-1938; and one multi-decade themed event.
Who can join our events?
Everyone is welcome to join our events, however due to the high interest they receive, we require all our guests to book in advance.
At the moment, our events are RSVP only and have a participant limit, which would vary depending on the venue/location capacity.
We strive to make our events a comfortable and friendly space for everyone, therefore we try to make sure we know how many people to expect.
Our Members get priority booking access to events (one week before the event gets announced to the public), and the reservations work on first-come, first serve basis.
The events are dedicated to adults, so if you're under 18, you'd have to come with a parent/guardian.
How do I sign up / join?
To participate in an event, please RSVP through the event page on our website. We'd ask you book for all the people in your party (if you're bringing a friend/plus one), so we know how many people to expect.
Once you make a reservation, you should receive an automated email confirming that you're on the guest list.
It is essential to be registered, as we will be sharing the exact details of the event start time & place with guests via email only.
If you didn't manage to RSVP as the event is fully booked, please check with the organisers if there's a waiting list - you might be able to join in case of any cancellations.
You can become a Member of Society of Salome after participating in minimum 5 events and signing up for membership here. Members get early access to events information & sign up and can enjoy special invitations we receive from museums & cultural instututions.
The event I wanted to attend is fully booked. What do I do?
Right now all our events have a participant limit and for organisational reasons, unfortunately we can't take any exceptions. For some events, we might issue a waiting list for tickets, which would be announced immediately after the event gets fully booked.
Please check our social media & website for all the details.
We would ask our guests to respect our limits and not try to attend or bring extra guests to events that they didn't book for.
Are your events free to attend?
Most of our events are free to attend, while some might require individually purchasing a ticket from a venue (e.g. during visits to museums, historic houses etc.). Some of our events (such as the Carnival Party) require a paid ticket in order to cover the event organising cost.
What if I don't have appropriate clothes to match the event's theme? Can I still come?
As we are not a historical reenactment group, we don't require 100% historical accuracy from our guests' dress. However, we do appreciate when the participants dress the part. All of our members put a lot of effort into their ensembles and we admire their endless creativity.
If you don't have an ensemble that's fully historically accurate for the period, you're welcome to creatively interpret the theme of an event at a level that you are comfortable with. We welcome beginners in vintage / historical fashion.
Please note that our events are dedicated to guests interested in historical fashion and are not general costume / fancy dress themed parties. We treat them as community gatherings and not tourist attractions or photo-ops.
Can I come to an event even if I don't know anyone? Is it easy to make friends?
Yes! Our events are designed to make it easy to meet new people and socialise. Usually the newcomers quickly turn into our regulars!
I'm a photographer. Can I take pictures at your event?
If you'd like to do photography at our event (not as a participant), please message us beforehand, so we can discuss the possibility and notify our guests. We try to inform participants before every event if there will be a professional photographer present and what will be the purpose of photography.
Please also respect the fact that our guests are private individuals and that pictures should be taken at their discretion. We do not allow photographers to use pictures from our events for commercial purposes or to sell them to third parties. All the external photographers need to be pre-booked.
What's your photography policy?
Our events are organised for the community, and we’d like to make sure our guests feel comfortable. Photography & filming for private use, social media etc. is welcome, including phones and modern / vintage cameras.
We always notify our guests in advance if there would be a professional photographer present at the event and share their photos afterwards.
Pictures from our events are shared on our social media accounts and website. Sometimes they get shared by press or news websites.
If you’d rather not be photographed during an event, please let us know in advance or at the start of the event and we will offer you a coloured paper wristband, signalling to the photographers that you do not wish to have your pictures taken.
If you'd like a photo of you to be removed from our social media accounts, please let us know and we’ll be happy to assist.
